Sr. Girls Volleyball

2017/18

Senior Girls Volleyball – Great strides were made this year for the Imperial/Holdfast Senior Girls Volleyball team.  After a rebuild year in 2016 with mostly grade 10 players, through hard practices and a great work ethic they improved greatly to challenge the tough teams in our east region.  The girls won their first tournament in three years with a timely conference victory of Kenaston.  The girls defeated Craik and Kenaston to win their pool and face a scrappy Colonsay team in the crossover.  The girls took control early and defeated Colonsay two straight.  They faced hometown Kenaston in the final.  After a brutal start (14-4 Kenaston lead) the girls regained their focus and made a miraculous comeback to win the first set 26-24.  The Kenaston girls were unable to recover as our girls took conferences.

Even after playing many of the top 1A to 5A teams in the province during tournament play, the Regionals would still be extremely difficult.  Defending champions Rose Valley, Bronze medalist Englefeld, Kenaston, Ituna and Annaheim would all be difficult to beat.  Our first game was against Englefeld and we were no match.  The next day the girls would have to beat Ituna to advance to the playoff round.  After a hard fought 3 set match the girls came out on top and then would face Rose Valley.  The girls had a competitive match with them but were still no match.  Next they would face Annaheim, a team who we've struggled with all season.  Our girls had trouble with serve receive and never could recover losing to Annaheim two straight.  After all is said and done next year looks really good, we lose Lexi Nelson a starting setter, but gain a new on in Kiana Ehmann.  The rest of the starting lineup with some skill improvement and lots of game time look to go to the next level next year.  A special thanks to Mrs. Kelly from Imperial for being a great assistant coach this year and to all the parents for their support.  I can't wait till next year.

October 2017 - The season is in full swing with the girls competing in three tournaments already.  At our first tournament in Bruno we lost to Annaheim and Perdue and were bumped to the consolation side.  Where we went undefeated and won the consolation final.  Next we traveled to Kipling.  The competition was much stronger with many top caliber teams from the 3A category competing including Carlyle, Kipling and Rocanville.  We remained competitive throughout the tournament but were just out matched by Carlyle who beat us two straight to advance to the semi-finals.

Our recent tournament in Weyburn, an even higher caliber tournament with many of the top 4A and 5A schools there.  Without a starting setter and struggles with keeping up the pace of the better teams we ended up on the consolation side where we defeated Montmarte in the semi-final but lost to Arcola in the final.

The girls are working hard to improve their skills and continue to work on the 6-2 offensive system.  Next they travel to Muenster, host their home tournament on October 13th & 14th, travel to Naicam on October 20th & 21st and finish the tournament season in Englefeld.  Best of luck girls!

- Mr. Kurbis (coach)

Sept 2017 - We have twelve girls from Grades 9 to 12.  We are re-joined with Imperial for another three years due to low numbers.  We are a year more experienced, as we were mostly a Grade 10/11 team last year.  We are learning the 6-2 offensive system, and have to improve our skills for our very competitive tournaments.  We chose to not play league this year so we can concentrate on improving skills and systems in practices.  Mr. Kurbis has a new assistant coach this year, Rhonda Kelly from Imperial.  A welcome addition, as Mr. Kurbis is getting too old to hit downball's without hurting himself J.  We have a really good team, so cheer us on when you come to our tournaments.

Sept 8th & 9th - Bruno
Sept 15th & 16th - Kipling
